As the new school year approaches, it’s essential to ensure that your child’s study environment supports their physical well-being. At H&D Physical Therapy, we understand the importance of ergonomics in preventing discomfort and long-term musculoskeletal issues. Here are some tips to help your child maintain proper posture and reduce the risk of injury during their academic activities.

Choosing the Right Chair and Desk

The first step to creating an ergonomic study space is selecting the right furniture. The desk and chair should be proportionate to your child’s height. When seated, their feet should be flat on the floor, with their knees at a 90-degree angle. The chair should support the lower back, promoting the natural curve of the spine. If the chair doesn’t have lumbar support, consider adding a cushion or a rolled-up towel.

Monitor Placement

For children who use a computer, monitor placement is crucial. The top of the screen should be at or slightly below eye level, and the monitor should be about 20 inches from the eyes. This setup helps prevent neck strain and encourages a neutral head position.

Keyboard and Mouse Position

The keyboard and mouse should be within easy reach, with the elbows bent at a 90-degree angle and the wrists in a neutral position. Encourage your child to avoid slouching and to sit back in the chair while typing to maintain good posture.

Backpack Basics

A heavy backpack can lead to back, neck, and shoulder pain. To minimize strain, the backpack should weigh no more than 10-15% of your child’s body weight. It’s also important that the backpack has two wide, padded shoulder straps and is worn over both shoulders to evenly distribute the weight.

Take Regular Breaks

Encourage your child to take short breaks every 30-45 minutes to stretch and move around. Simple exercises like shoulder rolls, neck stretches, and standing up to walk can help prevent stiffness and promote circulation.
