What is Meniere’s Disease?

Meniere’s Disease occurs in three stages. The first stage is simply sporadic vertigo and some hearing loss. It could be Meniere’s Disease if you experience vertigo more than once or at random times. Vertigo is commonly when a patient loses their balance and feels disorientated.

The second stage is categorized as hearing loss and vertigo, differing in severity. Usually, vertigo will become less severe but have noticeable pre-vertigo phases beforehand. During this phase, permanent hearing loss and a significant increase in tinnitus are also possible. If this occurs, seek a doctor.

Hearing loss, balance difficulties, and tinnitus occur in stage three. Hearing loss will increase while attacks of vertigo diminish or even stop completely. Some sounds may also begin to cause legitimate pain or discomfort. These sounds could be aiding in the damage to your balance organs in the ears.

Patients will often feel consistently unsteady or unbalanced. This is exacerbated when performing vigorous motion or when other senses are hampered, such as in the dark or with loud music. Sometimes patients may categorize their Meniere’s Disease attacks into episodes. While this is fine, hearing loss will usually persist even after their episodes of instability are over.

Treating Meniere’s Disease

Doctors will conduct three assessments. First, a hearing assessment will determine if hearing loss has transpired. If the test proves hearing loss has happened, doctors will move on to a balance test and then tests to rule out other diseases. Unfortunately, there is no definitive cure for Meniere’s Disease. Some treatments like balance therapy or medication reduce symptoms. Doctors might also recommend a special diet, low in salt, combined with a diuretic to reduce fluid intake. These also help reduce symptoms.
