What is Trigger Finger?

Trigger finger is a hand condition most common in women in their 40’s or 50’s. Symptoms of trigger finger are as follows

hand therapy in Midtown
  • pain at the base of the affected finger
  • stiffness or clicking
  • finger stuck in a bent position then suddenly pop straight

More severe cases can even cause the finger to eventually not bend or straighten. A trigger finger makes it very difficult or even impossible to use the affected finger, or in some cases, fingers.

Causes of Trigger finger

The causes of trigger finger are:

  • age, 40’s or 50’s
  • you’re female
  • problem with tendons or sheath in the finger
  • previous hand injury
  • Certain medical conditions: rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, gout, carpal tunnel, amyloidosis, etc.

If you have experienced any of these cases, you may suffer from a trigger finger. At H&D Physical Therapy, we specialize in hand therapy in Midtown and can help to manage or get rid of the pain.

Treating Trigger Finger

Different treatments for the hand condition trigger finger include splinting the finger, occupational therapy, and surgery. All of these treatments will help alleviate or remove the pain one is experiencing. Splinting the finger involves putting a splint on the affected finger to restrict movement, which will ease the pain. Occupational hand therapy assesses the severity of an individual’s cases and then applies the appropriate treatment plan.

At H&D Physical Therapy, we understand that all of our patients are different; that is why we assess each patient and provide individualized treatments. Surgery will never be the first option. It is the last resort when no other treatment has worked.
